The Buffalo Bills are paying Ed Oliver big money to be a difference-maker.
Through 13 games this season, there is a stark difference of opinion between those inside One Bills Drive and those outside the team facility on just how much difference he鈥檚 actually made.
Oliver鈥檚 sack total has plummeted from 2023 to this year, dropping from 9.5 to one. It鈥檚 the same story with his tackles for loss. He racked up 14 last year, and he has just two heading into Sunday鈥檚 showdown with the Detroit Lions at Ford Field.
鈥淚 can鈥檛 get caught up in this numbers game where I鈥檓 chasing something and now I鈥檓 really hurting the team,鈥 Oliver said Wednesday. 鈥淚t鈥檚 enough that I don鈥檛 have the numbers. Now, I can鈥檛 chase something and be out of position and put us behind the eight ball by me selfishly chasing numbers and things like that.

鈥淪o for me right now (it) is to continue to play team ball, just as I did last year when the numbers were big. I mean, the numbers are not that big this year, but I have to continue to unselfishly play for the team. I can鈥檛 just go out there and, 鈥極h, I want this and that,鈥 and selfishly go out there and put myself out of position, put us in a position to get gashed and things like that, chasing something that鈥檚 not team oriented.鈥
Oliver, 6-foot-1 and 287 pounds, turned 27 on Thursday. He鈥檚 in his sixth NFL season and has 25 career sacks, 66 quarterback hits, 222 tackles and six fumble recoveries in 89 career regular-season games (80 starts).
There is risk in judging any player鈥檚 performance solely based on statistics, but that鈥檚 especially true at defensive tackle in the Bills鈥 defense. There are times when a defensive tackle鈥檚 job might be to occupy multiple blockers, making it easier for a linebacker to make the tackle in run support or an edge rusher to apply pressure to the opposing quarterback.
鈥淚t鈥檚 working within the scheme of the defense, that鈥檚 what it is,鈥 Bills defensive line coach Marcus West said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 a 鈥榃e, not I,鈥 approach. Up front, we talk about four equals one. When one has success, we all have success. Ed鈥檚 a factor. I mean, Greg Rousseau is having a great year. He鈥檚 on pace to have his best year, and that鈥檚 possible because of Ed Oliver, and playing alongside Ed Oliver. When you have a target on your back, sometimes the other person beside you eats.鈥
The Bills keep their own statistics, and according to West, Oliver鈥檚 drop-off from a year ago might not be as pronounced as it seems. His 鈥渨in percentage,鈥 according to West, is just 2% lower than it was last season.
鈥淔irst and second down, Ed has been disruptive and dominant in the run game,鈥 West said. 鈥淢ost importantly, he鈥檚 been consistent. That鈥檚 what he has been.鈥
West鈥檚 opinion of Oliver鈥檚 impact on the run game does not match up with the outside perception. Oliver鈥檚 run defense grade, according to analytics website Pro Football Focus is 43.9 on a scale of 0-100. That ranks 54th out of 64 interior defensive linemen who have played at least 160 snaps against the run this season.
鈥淚 think stopping the run is an attitude, or really a choice, I would say,鈥 Oliver said. 鈥淲hen a double team is on you, you鈥檙e going to be physical. You鈥檙e going to sit on it and you鈥檙e going to split it or you鈥檙e not. You鈥檙e going to get drove off the ball. Either you鈥檙e going to be in your gap or you鈥檙e not. I think it鈥檚 just a choice that you have to make. Even though you might see something that will put you in what you think is a better position, as a team, as a whole, as a scheme, you have to put your own selfish desires aside to play gap-sound defense. That鈥檚 just how we play. We play gap-sound defense and when you don鈥檛 do that, we can鈥檛 stop the run.鈥
The Bills have not done a good enough job of stopping the run this season. The team ranks 26th in yards allowed per rushing attempt at 4.72. That鈥檚 concerning considering the Lions have one 1,000-yard rusher (Jahmyr Gibbs has carried 178 times for 1,016 yards) and another running back who might get there (David Montgomery has 180 carries for 771 yards) this season.
鈥淭wo of the premier runners of the league,鈥 Oliver said. 鈥淵eah, if we want to change the stigma, there is no better (time) than right now. We definitely have to stop the run better and that starts with up front, and everybody knows that. It starts with the D line. We have to do a better job. Me, personally, have to do a better job in the run game. That way I can have opportunities to rush the pass.鈥
The Rams last week were able to run the ball when they wanted, which allowed them to stay two-dimensional. That resulted in them being able to dictate the pace of the game. The Lions are a better running team than the Rams, so the Bills will need all 11 defensive players working together to stop the run.
鈥淲e鈥檙e (ticked) off. We鈥檙e on the road again, we didn鈥檛 get the results we wanted and I think it could have been a good learning lesson for us,鈥 Oliver said of the 44-42 loss to the Rams and how it might impact this week. 鈥淚 think maybe we dropped the ball a little bit. So I think we understand that and we know we鈥檙e a good team collectively. We鈥檙e going to come back out. We鈥檙e going to respond.鈥
Coach Sean McDermott is consistent in his messaging after games, that success or failure always begins at the line of scrimmage. If the Bills are going to be successful against Detroit, or more importantly down the road in the playoffs, they will need Oliver and fellow veteran defensive tackle DaQuan Jones to be dominant forces on the interior.
鈥淚鈥檓 saying Ed has been consistent,鈥 West said. 鈥淭he (tackle for loss) numbers aren鈥檛 there, but Ed has graded out to be consistent. Ultimately, pleased with Ed鈥檚 effort. Listen, he expects everything for himself. He鈥檚 self-motivated. He鈥檚 professional. He鈥檚 somebody I don鈥檛 have to motivate in that sense. My motivation to Ed is giving him tools to be able to do his job and be able to do his job better.鈥
It鈥檚 understandable that West would go to bat for his guy. Anything less would be a major red flag. The reality, though, is that Oliver is paid handsomely 鈥 an annual average salary of $17 million 鈥 and as such, his production is more closely scrutinized. There is no escaping that.
鈥淎ll I can do is keep rushing,鈥 Oliver said. 鈥淵eah, everybody wants the numbers. I would like to be sitting at seven or eight (sacks) just like I was last year, but that鈥檚 just not the case right now. So, as for me, it is a little bit frustrating, but I got to stick with my process and come to work every day and be the same guy every day, even though I might be a little frustrated about the numbers. I mean, numbers are numbers. But I can鈥檛 change and I can鈥檛 start being selfish because I鈥檓 chasing something that鈥檚 not team oriented.鈥
That鈥檚 exactly the approach West wants Oliver to take.
鈥淩ight now, obviously he鈥檚 looking for answers for numbers in his rush production, but the worst thing you can do is chase it,鈥 the team鈥檚 first-year defensive line coach said. 鈥淲e have a saying in our room. 鈥榃e鈥檙e chasing letters (meaning a 鈥榃鈥 for a win), not numbers.鈥 He鈥檚 had the numbers. We鈥檝e had the numbers, and we鈥檝e been sitting at home in February. He had the numbers this time last year as we sat at 7-6. It feels good to be 10-3 and still desiring more and bouncing back off a week like last week.鈥
Oliver did have two quarterback hits last week against the Rams, increasing his season total to eight. That鈥檚 third on the team behind Rousseau (19) and A.J. Epenesa (nine). That鈥檚 a sign that he鈥檚 getting close to the quarterback.
鈥淪ometimes the protection turns to him, sometimes it doesn鈥檛 and he has a one on one,鈥 McDermott said of Oliver. 鈥淪o it鈥檚 a combination of things, really, and sometimes what gets hidden in some of that is some of the factors that freed somebody else up. Could be him moving the quarterback off the spot and Greg gets a sack. So there鈥檚 some things hidden in there. But overall, I think there are some things that he can do better, and then collectively we can do better as a whole.鈥
Defensive coordinator Bobby Babich鈥檚 message to Oliver this season has borrowed a page from the Bill Belichick script: Do your job. Babich believes that as long as a player doesn鈥檛 get impatient and start chasing things, eventually, the ball will find them. When it does, they then have to make the play.
鈥淚鈥檓 not paying attention to statistics,鈥 Babich said. 鈥淧layers in this league run into ebbs and flows. The best thing that I鈥檝e learned with high-level players is just keeping it simple ... to where there is not a lot of thinking. We鈥檒l continue to do that. We鈥檒l continue to try to make things as simple as we possibly can for all our guys so we can compete at a high level.鈥
One positive Oliver took away from the loss to the Rams despite the defensive issues is the unit鈥檚 compete level never dropped. There was no quit among the players or any hanging of heads. Although the result was not nearly good enough, Oliver said the defense will learn from the results and apply those lessons moving forward.
He aims to do the same thing on an individual basis, even if his numbers aren鈥檛 where he wants them to be right now.
鈥淚t bothers me in general, but I don鈥檛 let that determine who I am as a person and as a teammate and as a father and a son,鈥 he said. 鈥淚 just have to refocus myself every week and go out there and bet the best Ed I can be.鈥
