Gov. Kathy Hochul said Saturday that she has directed the state Department of Corrections and Community Supervision to fire 14 prison employees involved in the beating death of an inmate.Â
The incident occurred Dec. 9 at Marcy Correctional Facility, a medium-security prison in Oneida County. Nearly a week later, DOCCS announced that an unnamed incarcerated individual was dead after "use of force" by staff.Â
The incarcerated individual was later identified as Robert Brooks, 43, who was serving a 12-year sentence for first-degree assault. Brooks was transported to a local hospital, where he died Dec. 10.Â
DOCCS Commissioner Daniel Martuscello III said he directed the department's Office of Special Investigations to review the incident. The state attorney general's office and New York State Police were also notified and are investigating the attack.Â

The attack has been described as "extremely disturbing," according to the Times Union. There is body camera footage of the incident.Â
Attorney General Letitia James said her office is reviewing the video and will release it to the public after Brooks' family has viewed it.Â
"Law enforcement professionals must be held to the highest standards of accountability, and I am committed to providing New Yorkers with the transparency they deserve," James said.
Hochul, who said she directed an internal review of the attack, offered her condolences to Brooks' family.Â
"The vast majority of correction officers do extraordinary work under difficult circumstances, and we are all grateful for their service," Hochul added. "But we have no tolerance for individuals who cross the line, break the law and engage in unnecessary violence or targeted abuse."
The incident is an extreme example of the increasing violence in state prisons. DOCCS has reported a record number of assaults on incarcerated individuals and staff this year.Â
