An inmate is dead after an incident that involved the use of force by staff at a central New York prison.Â
Daniel Martuscello III, commissioner of the state Department of Corrections and Community Supervision, said the incident occurred on Monday, Dec. 9, at Marcy Correctional Facility, a medium-security prison in Oneida County.
The inmate, whose name was not released, was transported to a hospital after the use of force incident and pronounced dead Tuesday.Â
More information about the incident wasn't released. Martuscello has directed the department's Office of Special Investigations to review the incident. He also notified the state attorney general's office and New York State Police.Â
The employees involved in the incident have been placed on administrative leave until the investigation is complete.Â

"As an agency, we take our mandate and obligation to protect our community and all of the individuals in our care extremely seriously," Martuscello said. "There is no place for, and I will not tolerate, violence in our correctional facilities."Â
Prison violence has been rising, with record numbers of assaults on incarcerated individuals and staff. As of Dec. 1, DOCCS reported 2,697 assaults on incarcerated individuals and 1,938 assaults on staff this year — both topping the previous highs of 2,113 assaults on incarcerated individuals and 1,672 assaults on staff set last year.Â
