Buffalo Bills defensive coordinator Bobby Babich on Sunday went after a rookie quarterback playing behind a patchwork offensive line.
The Bills blitzed New England quarterback Drake Maye a season-high 20 times in 45 drop backs in the 24-21 victory, according to Buffalo News charting.
Not only was it a season high at 44%, but that total also was the most blitzes by a Bills鈥 defense since a 21-blitz game in a December 2021 home victory over Carolina.
The pressure worked well. Maye was 6 of 16 for 67 yards with an interception when the Bills rushed five or more men. There also was one sack on a blitz and three defensive penalties on blitz plays.
The Bills now are at a 20.4% blitz rate on drop backs for the season, which is sixth lowest in the league, according to NFL Next Gen Stats.

Here鈥檚 a position-by-position breakdown of the game, based on video review and scored on a scale of 0 to 5:
Quarterback (3.0). The Bills鈥 quick passing game was not on point against the Patriots. The Bills ran the ball well on first down 鈥 15 times for 121 yards. But first-down passing, which always should be a strength, was off rhythm. Josh Allen was just 4 of 10 for 45 yards, with one scramble, on 11 first-down drop backs. A little bit of the problem was Allen could have taken some shorter, check-down profits at times. On an early deep misfire, Allen wanted Keon Coleman, who was well covered by Christian Gonzalez. A checkdown to the flat was open but David Edwards was beaten by Jeremiah Pharms, who was in Allen鈥檚 face. Allen misfired low on an early receiver screen. Allen didn鈥檛 pull the check-down trigger on the late scramble when he hit his elbow.
Nobody was open on the third-and-16 deep pass to the end zone. It was like a punt, and the Bills caught a break when interceptor Marte Mapu tried to return it and was tackled at the 1-yard line by Ty Johnson. On a third-quarter sack, Allen didn鈥檛 see Mapu come off the edge as a free rusher on a safety blitz. That was on the QB.
Allen made an audible to check to the ideal run play on the long James Cook TD. Allen was an efficient 6 of 8 for 49 yards vs. the blitz. Overall, a QB鈥檚 job is to win, and Allen did enough to get it done.
Running backs (4.5). Cook鈥檚 46-yard TD run was his fourth 40-plus rush of the season, tied for second in the NFL. The Eagles鈥 Saquon Barkley has seven. Cook made a great cut to explode through a big hole, and speedy Pats safety Kyle Dugger couldn鈥檛 catch Cook. Cook鈥檚 4-yard TD reception was a nice play designed to attack man coverage. The Bills ran Khalil Shakir on an orbit motion to the right flat, then ran Cook from the right side of the backfield to the far left sideline, creating a long chase and run for Pats safety Brenden Schooler. Cook will win that footrace every time. Ty Johnson made Anfernee Jennings whiff in the backfield on an early, 5-yard run. Ray Davis showed speed on a 17-yard third-and-1 catch. That was a tendency breaker for coordinator Joe Brady.
Offensive line (4.5). It was a good day for the O-line as the Bills asserted their run-blocking power vs. a Pats defense that was missing three core players up the spine (defensive tackle Christian Barmore, linebacker Ja鈥橶haun Bentley and safety Jabrill Peppers. The blocking combination of Alec Anderson and Reggie Gilliam created a lot of displacement. O鈥機yrus Torrence and Connor McGovern had good blocks on Cook鈥檚 46-yard TD. A holding foul on Torrence that wiped out a 13-yard run in the fourth quarter was a bad call. Dion Dawkins and Spencer Brown again were outstanding in pass protection. Brown had a key false start and was beaten late by Daniel Ekuale on a run stuff.
Receivers (2.0). Late in the second quarter, the Pats rushed just three and played coverage. Allen threw a strike deep but Shakir dropped a tough catch. Amari Cooper saw a lot of the outstanding Gonzalez. Cooper dropped a hitch vs. the rookie in the fourth quarter. Dalton Kincaid and Dawson Knox made a couple of nice grabs.
Defensive line (3.5). The grade gets bumped up because of the huge plays made by Greg Rousseau. He squeezed his gap and forced a fumble by Rhamondre Stevenson early in the third quarter. That led to the go-ahead field goal. Then 鈥淕root鈥 blew up a swing pass for Stevenson that became a muffed lateral, recovered in the end zone for a touchdown. Rousseau anticipated and defeated a cut-block by tackle Demontrey Jacobs.
Said Patriots coach Jerod Mayo of the play: 鈥淚t鈥檚 the cut-block. If we get the cut-block by the tackle, watching the film, we have a big play there.鈥
Von Miller had a good day with five pressures against a low-level right tackle, Jacobs. A.J. Epenesa went offside on an early third-and-2 play. On the 14-yard TD run by Stevenson, Dawuane Smoot didn鈥檛 pinch the gap enough, Baylon Spector didn鈥檛 get off a block and Cam Lewis missed a point-blank tackle at the 4-yard line. Jordan Phillips didn鈥檛 get down the line on an early pitch but did make a goal-line run stuff late.
Linebackers (2.5). Spector didn鈥檛 get off to a good start before suffering a calf injury. He was flagged for pass interference on the first drive and was blocked on two 14-yard runs. Dorian Williams wasn鈥檛 perfect but played hard and fast. He had three run stuffs and four pressures. He rushed the passer 14 times. There was more positive than negative. Williams now has a team-high 105 tackles for the season, while Terrel Bernard has 98. Williams didn鈥檛 get deep enough in Cover 2 on a 26-yard pass to tight end Austin Hooper. Williams and Cole Bishop were just a tad late in zone coverage on the late TD pass to Hunter Henry.
Defensive backs (2.0). Lewis had good eyes on the QB and a fast break on the ball on his end zone interception. Kaiir Elam had an eventful day. On the 28-yard TD pass to cap the first drive, Elam was in good position and was beaten by a great throw. He had good coverage on the next two deep sideline balls. Elam and Bishop closed fast on a third-down pass to force a punt. But Elam had two pass interference fouls in the end zone. Elam had hands on the outside of the shoulders on the first and ran into the receiver on an underthrow on the second.
Special teams (2.0). The Patriots returned the opening kickoff 48 yards. Joe Andreessen and Javon Solomon allowed themselves to get blocked too wide, while Edefuan Ulofoshio couldn鈥檛 get off a double-team block. That created a big lane, and it set up a short opening scoring drive. The Bills weren鈥檛 prepared for the Patriots鈥 fake punt line plunge in the second quarter. On the plus side, the punt protection unit did a good job on two fourth-quarter punts in which the Pats were trying to get a block. Sam Martin got both punts off quickly. On an early punt, gunner Jalen Virgil beat his blocker downfield and downed the ball at the Pats鈥 9. Tyler Bass made a 50-yard field goal at a critical time to give the Bills the lead for good. Shakir recovered an onsides kickoff.
