SKANEATELES | People searching for a treat in Skaneateles are saying "Whoopee!" over the new gathering place on Jordan Street, where they can even get "Whoopi-Pie."
On Memorial Day weekend, Christopher Grilli and his wife, Katie Brennan, opened The Corner at Skaneateles Bakery at 23 Jordan St. in Skaneateles. The banner on the window says they offer specialty drinks, fine desserts and light fare.
Grilli and Brennan have owned Skaneateles Bakery, which is next door at 19 Jordan St., since July 2011. Last fall, when the space at No. 23 became available, Grilli and Brennan saw it as "perfect for a cafe/restaurant that could serve as a gathering place for people in the village."
"The Bakery is that place for many people in the morning and early afternoons, and we hope The Corner can become that place for people in the late afternoons and evenings," Grilli said in an email. "Our hours overlap slightly for lunch, but the menus are completely different."

The atmosphere at The Corner on a recent day was casual and pleasant, upstairs and downstairs. Julia Foster, The Corner's co-manager with Theresa Mendez, took a break and talked about the cafe's offerings, including that Whoopi-Pie.
She described it as a cookie sandwich: two chocolate cakes cooked into the shape of a cookie, with a cream frosting filling.
Foster, 25, thought back to her days as a kid, when she would enjoy the shops of downtown Skaneateles, stopping here and there for a bite.
Now that she's the manager of one of those shops, she enjoys seeing kids come in for a macaroni and cheese, a noodle bowl or a lettuce wrap.
"If I was a kid again, and I came back in here, I would probably be in my glory," said Foster, who has a business management degree from Keuka College. "I can just see myself. I probably wouldn鈥檛 even get any food. It would have just been the desserts and ice cream."
The Corner offers ice cream, layer cakes, truffles, eclairs, Whoopi-Pies, macaroons and more.
"We want it to be a comfortable, welcoming gathering place for people in the village," Grilli said. "A place where someone can come for a latte and something sweet or for dinner with the family or on a date or for a late-night drink."
Madison Ruffo and Mia Mason, both of Skaneateles, were customers at The Corner on a recent afternoon.聽 聽
"I've been to the Bakery plenty of times," Ruffo said as she waited for her order to arrive. "I know this is like an addition to the Bakery, and I've always loved their food, so I imagine the food here is good too. I've had their desserts here. I haven't had their actual food here yet."
As she waited for her order to arrive, Mason added, "I have had their desserts here. I鈥檝e had their cheesecake, and it鈥檚 really, really good. I would definitely have it again."
Eloise Smith sat at another table upstairs with her mother, Amy Smith. Eloise said she usually goes to the Bakery, where she likes the club sandwich.
"This is different food from what they have over there," she said. "Over there it's more of like a lunch, like a sandwich and a cookie or a doughnut or something. And then over here it's more upscale."
Her mom described the decor as "kind of the new classic."
"I came here for lunch yesterday and came back again today," Amy Smith said. "So, obviously, it's good."
Co-manager Foster has heard customers describe The Corner as "very modern," "contemporary" and "so cozy."
"I've really been getting great comments from the customers," she said. "They love the food. They love the staff. Everything has been really good. Everyone just sort of enjoyed the whole atmosphere that we have. And I think that overall, everyone鈥檚 been really glad with the opening of it."
The food is made in-house, she said, and all of the recipes were created by Grilli and Brennan. 聽
"And we have great cooks that prepare our food for us, and we get as much of that locally as we can," Foster said. "We have Muranda cheese from Waterloo. ... And we鈥檝e got a lot of local wines, local beers, a lot of local fare."
Once the local farmers have all their聽 produce ready, The Corner will be purchasing from them as well, she said.
"We'll be doing that through the summer," Foster said.
Grilli wrote that he and his wife are "blessed to have such support from the community.
"More than anything else, we want this to be is a comfortable place for everyone in the community. We've been open for two weeks and people seem to be enjoying it," he said. "We're always looking for ways to improve and we're happy to hear any helpful suggestions and feedback."
