Auburn has been waiting a month to hear whether the city will win a $10 million state grant that could accelerate downtown development on several fronts — and now it will have to wait a few days more.
The results of the state's Downtown Revitalization Initiative grant competition, originally set to be announced Thursday, will now be announced "very early next week," an Empire State Development spokesperson said.
City Clerk Chuck Mason said Friday the city had not been notified of the delay by the state.
"We're just as curious as anyone else is at the moment," he said.
Auburn is competing against Oswego, Cortland and Fulton in the central New York division of the competition. Mayor Michael Quill and city officials at a May 31 press conference at Memorial City Hall.

The city has since to anchor the market project, should Auburn be awarded the grant.
However, city officials have stressed that the application's proposals are simply possibilities, and that their inclusion does not guarantee they'd be funded by the grant. One of its conditions is the assigning of a developer to advise the winning city on its plans.
On the other hand, Mason said, the realization of those plans doesn't depend upon receipt of the grant. The city and the plans' stakeholders hope to move forward with them anyway, perhaps through other state funding avenues. The Downtown Revitalization Initiative grant would just speed up that movement.
"It's put out some really good ideas for the future of downtown," Mason said. "We're anxiously awaiting the announcement. But we will patiently wait."
