HIT: A project to majorly expand broadband in portions of Cayuga County got a massive boost last week.
It was announced the Central New York Regional Planning and Development Board will receive $26 million for a new network covering approximately 275 miles from Cayuga to Cortland counties, with a branch running east to Syracuse. Cayuga has committed $7 million toward the $36 million project, with Cortland covering the remainder.
Cayuga will pursue short-term funding for its share, and will then be reimbursed over a two-year period by the board.Â
While there is a tight deadline of December 2026 for the project, the need for it demands that the deadline be met. Nearly 2,000 homes in Cayuga County still lack access to high-speed internet.
MISS: The court cases involving a violent night outside an Auburn bar last fall came to a close this week with a second man sent to state prison.

Matthew Williams-McIntyre, 28, of Geneva, was sentenced in Cayuga Court Court to 4.5 years in prison for second-degree criminal possession of a weapon for his role in an attack that seriously injured two people at Harley's Pub in November 2023.
Williams-McIntyre had a gun with him when he and Angelo L. Diaz III, 28, also of Geneva, went to Harley's and got into a dispute with people there. In the end, one man ended up with a gunshot wound to the chest and another was stabbed in the throat.
Diaz was sentenced in October to 10 years in prison on charges of second-degree attempted murder and first-degree assault.
HIT: There are many skilled players in the brewing game in Cayuga County, but Prison City Brewing holds the distinction of making the biggest impact and helping elevate the entire local industry.
Owners Dawn and Marc Schulz opened their brewpub on State Street in Auburn 10 years ago this month, and have since expanded with a 20-barrel production facility on North Street. A third location, in Lake Placid, opened this year. Prison City is now one of the most successful breweries in central New York, and its acclaimed Mass Riot IPA is available at bars, restaurants and grocery stores near and far.
Since the explosion of the craft beer business, Cayuga County has become a major hot spot for enthusiasts with not only Prison City, but also Shep's Brewing in Auburn, Lunkenheimer Craft Brewing Co. in Weedsport, Aurora Brewing Co. in Ledyard, Summerhill Brewing in Summerhill, Next Chapter Brewpub in Auburn and Owasco Lake Brewing in Moravia.
Dawn and Marc Schulz were dining at Lasca's last week when they saw something they once could only have dreamed.
