AUBURN — Union Springs and Weedsport, two schools that have won the last nine girls Cayuga County Holiday Basketball Tournament titles, will meet in the championship game at Cayuga Community College Saturday.Â
Union Springs clinched its spot in the title game with a 71-48 win over Port Byron. Jennifer Daum scored a game-high 28 points and Allie Parker added 14 to lead the Wolves.Â
After opening on a 24-2 run, Union Springs' first-half lead began to shrink as Port Byron mounted a rally. The Panthers made it a 5-point game late in the second quarter and entered halftime down 9.Â
But the Wolves were too much for the Panthers in the second half. Daum scored 20 in the final two quarters, providing a dominant presence inside that Port Byron could not contain.Â
Emma Taylor scored 18 points for Port Byron, which will face Southern Cayuga in the consolation game Saturday.
Later in the evening, Weedsport defeated Southern Cayuga 61-38 to secure its spot in the championship game.Â
Four players — Kayla Flask (14), Mallory Brown (12), Keegan McNabb (12) and Anna Kershner (12) — scored in double figures for the Wolverines.Â
Weedsport jumped out to a 22-6 first-quarter lead thanks to five threes in the opening stanza. The Wolverines' defense posed problems for Southern Cayuga, which was held to 14 points in the first half.Â
Charli Bennett and Alycia Orona each scored 13 points for Southern Cayuga.Â
Union Springs is seeking its fourth consecutive Cayuga County Holiday Basketball Tournament crown. The reigning champions defeated Southern Cayuga to win the last three title games.Â
For Weedsport, it will be the first appearance in the tournament's championship game since 2019. That was the last of six consecutive titles for the Wolverines.Â
The championship game will be played at 6 p.m. Saturday at Cayuga Community College's Spartan Hall.Â
