A large column of black smoke visible from throughout Auburn on Saturday evening was caused by a tire fire behind Nucor Steel, the Auburn Fire Department told мÓƶà¶à¿ª½±¼Ç¼.
Capt. Mark Pineau of the department said Sunday that the fire is believed to have been caused by the molten steel that Nucor often moves to the tire yard to cool. About four tires caught fire, he said, resulting in smoke that made the fire look bigger than it actually was. It took the department about 40 minutes to extinguish the fire due to water supply issues, as the nearest hydrant was 700 feet away.
No injuries were reported.Â
The smoke from the fire became visible in the sky around 6:15 p.m. It stopped emanating from the fire by 6:45 p.m., but lingered into the air over the city until dark.
